One of the Florida police officers featured in a viral photo many dubbed as the “Hunky Cops” is in hot water this week after it was discovered he allegedly posted anti-semitic “jokes” on social media.
A selfie of three police officers from the Gainesville Police Department made headlines after Facebook users expressed their thirst for the hunky cops. The photo was posted to the department’s Facebook page as Hurricane Irma bombarded the state. The caption ready they were “getting ready to do some work.”
But officer Michael Hamill, 28, is under fire for posts he shared before he was working for the Gainesville Police Department, The Gainesville Sun reports. The posts are from 2011 and appear to be written by Hamill.
“So i find it funny that people will talk about how our government needs to do something about our economy and in reality its YOU who needs to stop taking advantage of our system and get a life and so something with your life,” one post reportedly reads. “Gotta love reality when it hits you in the face. Stupid people annoy me. put them in an oven and deal with them the hitler way. haha”
Another post from 2013 shared on Facebook read: “Who knew that reading Jewish jokes before I go to bed would not only make me feel better about myself but also help me to sleep better as well. Here is one for everybody ‘What’s the difference between Boy Scouts and Jews?’ Anybody know? Well it is because ‘Boy Scouts come back from their camps.'”
People magazine points out Hamill’s Facebook page is no longer available to the public but someone took screenshots of the postings and shared them on social media.
Gainesville Police Department spokesman Ben Tobias wrote a statement on the department’s Facebook page, saying it was “reviewing the allegation.”
“The Gainesville Police Department prides itself with our philosophy and mission of compassion, inclusion, and respect and will fully review the matter,” the statement read.
Before the alleged postings gained attention Hamill spoke with Time magazine about his newfound fame, saying he’s “never had this much attention before. It’s an ego boost – very flattering and funny.”
